New Factors in the Global Warming Debate

In the general public discourse the climate change debate has been, so far, confined almost entirely to the greenhouse gas issue. Our economycarbon footprint utterly dominates all climate change discussions. In actual fact there are several major influences acting on the global climate in terms of raising or lowering atmospheric temperatures. The warming induced by greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, is the first such influence.

However, while the physics of the greenhouse effect are clear, the chain of causality between greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere and specific weather patterns is not fully understood. At this time the actual consequences of such accumulation cannot be accurately predicted in terms of timing and impact. The second influence comes from periodic variations in the earth orbit around the sun and in the inclination of its axis.

These cyclical variations have been relatively well correlated with past ice ages and warmer inter-glacial periods.

According to some recent published research in this area our planet would currently be sliding into another cold period or ice age, although the timing is hard to pin down. The third influence, which has come into prominence only recently, is solar activity as manifested through the sunspot cycle. For the earth, a high sunspot count means warming, a low count cooling. Although the basic cycle has an average periodicity of eleven years, there are also long term variations which are not well understood.

Sunspot activity has just reached a low which may or may not be significant. But if this low persists, significant cooling can be expected. One can conclude that the overall picture is becoming increasingly ambiguous.

Greenhouse gas accumulation due to the use of fossil fuels is no longer the only story in town, nor is warming the inevitable future outcome.

The purpose here is not to claim that greenhouse gas accumulation is not significant. It is to warn that other influences are in play which can be equally important, and that our scientific understanding must be increased before major economic measures, such as a tax on carbon emissions, are implemented. One such measure, a so-called cap and trade scheme, is currently under discussion in the US Congress.

Such a scheme has considerable drawbacks. First, it amounts to a highly regressive tax on energy, which will disproportionally affect the lower income fractions of the population. Second, it introduces huge market distortions which vastly complicate efforts to deal with the gradually increasing price and reduced availability of petroleum. To be successful, such efforts require first and foremost a realistic and workable long-term energy strategy, the elaboration of which must precede any large-scale government intervention in the energy area.

The US government at this time does not have such a strategy, which, as far as its impact on climate is concerned, must rest on a much better scientific understanding of the various influences on climate listed above. Funding to increase and test this understanding will have a far greater impact than any of the currently proposed schemes to reduce carbon emissions. Until such understanding is on more solid footing, there is no valid justification for major initiatives in economic policy on climate change grounds.

The Great Global Warming Debate

Climate Change and Global Warming are indeed a huge hot topic in all its controversy and media hype. Many people are up in arms over the thought of global warming and indeed they want the United States to sign the Kyoto Treaty and agree to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases.

We can't say for certain how much the globe may be warming up though, how much is down to human activities versus natural cycles, or whether these movements in global temperature would be mostly good or mostly bad for the majority of people.

Recently in an online think tank one think tanker was berrated for placing a post in the Global Warming area of the website on a Chinese Flooding event which washed away 90 people and in another province killed 117 people.


Though Global Warming doesn't seem that bad, with many people's image of it being that of a planet wrapped soundly in a warm blanket, it's something that needs to be taken seriously and it's something that could greatly hinder, and destroythe future.

In a nutshell, Global Warming is the gradual increase of the temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere. Basically global warming is the increase of the earth’s surface temperature due to chemicals in the atmosphere. Some Global Warming Alarmists think it is too late to stop the effects of mankind on our atmosphere and that these undesired effects will cause the triggering of super storms, freak weather and catastrophic situations. In order to control and avoid the effects of global warming we must first agree with a notion that it is occurring, and take some steps to end or even reduce it. Maybe the whole world needs to rethink the level playing field rules over again and then we can get together and talk about Global Warming, CO2 emissions and the Kyoto Treaty or a more realistic version of it.

Luckily most of the Global Warming ideas are not based on very solid scientific evidence, but our Planet is going through a climate change cycle and this cycle, which is actually caused by a lot of inter-related cycles are warming areas our Planet among other things. There is no actual scientific data that global warming is caused by anything other than ordinary, natural climatic cycles.Some Global Warming alarmists are now thinking it is time to invest their money in House Boat Stocks and pick out a big ship to live on?

So the talk of climate change rages on and whilst I see no end in site to it the doomsdayers will have you agree the sky is falling ,remember chicken little.So get yourself some scientific education on the subject because if you dont you'll end up becoming one of them.

Global Warming Debate Over Heats at Online Think Tank

If you think the media is heavy handed on the Global Warming doom and gloom scenarios getting everyone heated up then you should have seen the temperatures rise in our Online Think Tank the other day over the issue after the Paris meeting of all the atmospheric scientists.

Unbelievable the energy and heat coming off these debates. Folks are passionate on both sides indeed. One of our Think Tank members who has been studying this at length for many years stated;

"I have read hundreds of white papers and many hundreds of pages of research. And not just on what Global Warming Alarmists present and the theory that mankind’s emission of CO2 is causing all this, but rather all the research of inter-related information too such as:

Then with all that said everyone in our Online Think Tank made it clear they are against Unnecessary Pollution and they are for efficiency with energy, transportation and usage.

A few just cringe at this over zealousness of the alarmists, even go so far as to guestion their integrity, research and linear applications of their observations in their attempt to prove themselves right to further collect more research dollars to their centers and they protest.

Others in the Online Think Tank stacked up their evidence, collected research papers and said; “Oh yah? Refute This!” As you can see each side has a lot at stake and perhaps that is what is heating up our planet, all that human intent, passion and energy? Global Warming Debate: How To Save Our Planet

As the human race evolves, technology is developing and rapidly coming to our aid in solving most of our modern dilemmas. Dilemmas which cover a wide range of issues, from simple challenges such as improving the composition of paper-based products to the big global-impact issues of providing a higher standard of living and the state of our planet.

One of the key international subjects which regularly tops political agendas is Global Warming. But inspite of all the rhetoric there is generally minimal headway made in moving to resolve the issue, to the huge disappointment of the world's population.

Electioneering monopolises the debate in most cases and the serious environmental issue gets pushed into the background.

Further secondary issues are created and the main problem worsened by intransigence.

On every occasion the topic is discussed, vehement discussions ensue from politicians who swan around in large expensive cars, which hoover through the gas, and release massive volumes of smog into the air.

No one wants to stand up and be counted and spearhead the solution.

And there is actually no stimulus for them to do so. Conservative politics amply compensates them.

Politics aside, the future, however, looks rosier with further discoveries being made in ways of detecting what causes ozone damage and pinpointing causes of global warming caused by humans.

Solutions range in scope from cleaner and gentler chemicals, to challenging the very foundations of "green" power.

A well-documented move is car-makers getting into the swing of helping save the planet by producing hybrid vehicles, which cause less damage to the environment, consume less fuel, oil and other toxic substances, and rate lower for emissions.

What we really need now is a major change in thinking by Western society, and widespread recognition of the problems we are facing in order to change this situation.

Manufacturers are being persuaded to change their approach by governments who are offering them incentives such as tax breaks to produce cleaner, "greener" items.

Finding ways to lower carbon emissions rates for cars is a must, and it is good to see that the tax incentives are gradually expanding to include other types of manufacturers, so that they too can experience similar benefits in return for changing to cleaner and more energy efficient methods of production.

But does all of this actually benefit all of us in the long run?

Are governments really looking after the interests of their citizens by offering these sweeteners to the big industrial conglomerates?

It is true that many people are all for encouraging programs that promote the use of cleaner power, and less environmentally hazardous chemicals, especially since less "green" methods and chemicals tend to be more costly.

But your average taxpayers are not managing to reap the benefits of trying to switch to a "greener" lifestyle when they examine their own budgets.

Electrical companies are starting to offer "green blocks" of power for sale to consumers, but these blocks are for purchase additional to the normal household power bill, and do not offer savings on the next months bill in exchange for buying the blocks.

Something is way out of balance here: major manufacturers are being co-erced with tax breaks and incentives to develop cleaner methods of operating, but millions of households are not getting that same encouragement.

A positive move to help global warming, would be to create a reward scheme to recognise the small but important things that every household could and often does, easily do such as save power at home.

A simple incentive scheme would lead to millions of watts of power being saved annually.

The amount of power needed world-wide would then be a fraction of current consumption rates, giving power companies the opportunity to participate in cleaning up large areas of industrial wasteland, instead of merely the handful of disused and derelict manufacturing areas they clean up currently.

It would be a fantastic idea to decontaminate smog-ridden towns, and reduce energy usage, so that resources from the earth are not burned relentlessly to supply energy we do not really need.

All the little things that we can do, when magnified globally, would help arrest the annual toll of destruction caused to the ozone layer, and would considerably slow the damage that we earthlings are causing to our very finest asset, our planet.

It is not solely the government or solely the people who should be landed with sorting out this environmental mess.

We all have the power to make individual changes; but it needs the concerted efforts of the whole human race to make the major transformations our planet so desperately craves.
