The Definition of Global Warming

Hello friends and thanks for reading.

My article today is concerning the definition of global warming. Since it is such a hot topic in today's media, it's important to know the facts behind this idea that the earth is constantly getting warmer. Global warming is not a 20th century phenomenon. It has, in fact, occurred in the past more than once, along with periods of extreme cold known as the ice ages. With so much written and reported about global warming, sometimes it's difficult to detect which is fact and which is just part of scientific scare tactics.

Global warming is basically the increase of the earth's average temperature and its projected continuation in the coming years. The unprecedented super-accelerated rate of global warming happening today is supposedly due to the amount of greenhouse gases being spewed into the atmosphere.

The increase in global temperature could cause many side effects including sea level rise and drastic changes to the pattern of precipitation resulting in floods and drought.

As the Earth's average temperature rises, effects in its landmasses and sea water level become apparent. Polar ice caps melt along with glaciers, contributing to higher and warmer sea levels. By the end of the century, it is estimated that sea levels can increase from 4 inches to a high of about 40 inches if global warming continues unabated.

Currently, there in an ongoing political debate on what action, if any, should be taken to help lower the chance of global warming. How these measures will fare and contribute to the long-term maintenance of our planet, though, remains to be seen.

Effects of Global Warming on the Climate of Europe

Living in the 21st century, we are familiar with the phenomenon of global warming. It is responsible for adversely affecting the climate and posing a serious threat to the social and economic development of countries across the world. Since Europe is located in the northern part of the globe, there are peculiar changes in its climate in the past decade. This article will provide details about global warming-caused weather changes on the continent.

What is Global Warming?

To put it simply, it means that our Earth’s atmosphere and oceans are getting warmer each year. This is due to the rise in greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which absorbs the heat of the sun more than the required amounts and causes our planet to get warmer. These gases are emitted because of human activities like pollution, deforestation and the likes.

What Does It Do?

Global warming has a very severe impact on our lives.

It creates floods, droughts, famines and even devastating hurricanes. Its long-term impact is even worse: rising levels of seawater, extreme weather changes, unbalanced ecology, and a lot more. For instance, the weather forecast in London predicted in 2010 was that UK would experience the coldest winter to date, and one of the main reasons behind this was global warming.

How Does It Affect Europe?

Being in the temperate zone, Europe usually has extreme and dry climate with less rainfall. However, UK and Ireland are strongly influenced by the sea.

Hence, their climate is more humid and erratic as compared to North America, which is located around the same latitude.

But, global warming has changed this scenario considerably. The heat wave of 2003 and the chilly winters of 2010 have severely affected London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds weather, amongst others. As each year sees more erratic weather, there has been a significant loss in the national economy. Agriculture, tourism, and industrial development have really taken a hit.

Studies show that as compared to the global average, Europe is warmer, and the last decade (2001-2010) has seen a rise of 1.2 degree Celsius as compared to the previous decade. It is predicted that along with other cities, Bristol weather is going to experience frequent extremes, including frost days, dry spells, and heat waves. This time around, they will be more intense and last for longer periods of time.

This issue is affecting people on a very large scale and international norms are being put into place to ensure that companies reduce their carbon footprint. On an individual level we all need to do our bit to save the ecology.

New Factors in the Global Warming Debate

In the general public discourse the climate change debate has been, so far, confined almost entirely to the greenhouse gas issue. Our economycarbon footprint utterly dominates all climate change discussions. In actual fact there are several major influences acting on the global climate in terms of raising or lowering atmospheric temperatures. The warming induced by greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, is the first such influence.

However, while the physics of the greenhouse effect are clear, the chain of causality between greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere and specific weather patterns is not fully understood. At this time the actual consequences of such accumulation cannot be accurately predicted in terms of timing and impact. The second influence comes from periodic variations in the earth orbit around the sun and in the inclination of its axis.

These cyclical variations have been relatively well correlated with past ice ages and warmer inter-glacial periods.

According to some recent published research in this area our planet would currently be sliding into another cold period or ice age, although the timing is hard to pin down. The third influence, which has come into prominence only recently, is solar activity as manifested through the sunspot cycle. For the earth, a high sunspot count means warming, a low count cooling. Although the basic cycle has an average periodicity of eleven years, there are also long term variations which are not well understood.

Sunspot activity has just reached a low which may or may not be significant. But if this low persists, significant cooling can be expected. One can conclude that the overall picture is becoming increasingly ambiguous.

Greenhouse gas accumulation due to the use of fossil fuels is no longer the only story in town, nor is warming the inevitable future outcome.

The purpose here is not to claim that greenhouse gas accumulation is not significant. It is to warn that other influences are in play which can be equally important, and that our scientific understanding must be increased before major economic measures, such as a tax on carbon emissions, are implemented. One such measure, a so-called cap and trade scheme, is currently under discussion in the US Congress.

Such a scheme has considerable drawbacks. First, it amounts to a highly regressive tax on energy, which will disproportionally affect the lower income fractions of the population. Second, it introduces huge market distortions which vastly complicate efforts to deal with the gradually increasing price and reduced availability of petroleum. To be successful, such efforts require first and foremost a realistic and workable long-term energy strategy, the elaboration of which must precede any large-scale government intervention in the energy area.

The US government at this time does not have such a strategy, which, as far as its impact on climate is concerned, must rest on a much better scientific understanding of the various influences on climate listed above. Funding to increase and test this understanding will have a far greater impact than any of the currently proposed schemes to reduce carbon emissions. Until such understanding is on more solid footing, there is no valid justification for major initiatives in economic policy on climate change grounds.

Experience Global Education With Strategic International Alliances

Advancements in global technology and increasing interdependence of the world economies have contributed to the rapid globalization of higher education. The dawn of 21st century, coincided with globalization and international business revolution, has metamorphosed the management education milieu. Management and business education is no longer confined within national borders. Todays business world draws its professional work force from every corner of the globe. And this is how the need for strategic alliance extends its scope in the arena of business and management education.

Strategic alliance with international business schools is an excellent way to gain competitive edge in the globalized business environment. It also helps in developing sustainable competitive advantages materializing from the issues of quality, purpose and responsibility in the new across-borders educational sphere. By developing international strategic alliances, business schools strive to enhance their strategic resources which they know, would not be possible otherwise. Hence, the basic premise of forming international alliances is to create a new collaborative and innovative value of management studies which cannot be achieved independently.

Besides benefiting the business schools, forming international strategic alliances can be highly advantageous for the management students. Diversity in terms of students nationalities, experience and background helps them in gaining international exposure and knowledge. It also improves their foreign language skills which prepares them for exciting careers in international business. Besides classroom interaction, outside social activities and student clubs bring together the students of different views which help them in widening their mental horizons regarding career options. Even after the completion of studies, it leaves them with a supportive network of colleagues that span around the globe.

Forging ties with international business and management institutions also play a vital role in strengthening relationships among governments, economies and businesses across the world. This is the reason why the trend of global management institutions is popularizing day by day. HULT is one such international business school which offers its academic programmes in 5 different countries around the globe. London grad school is one of the leading institutes for higher education these days. Besides UK MBA, it offers various other programmes including London masters multimedia and London career digital marketing. HULT provides a truly globalized approach to all its courses and students undertaking them.
Strategic international alliances for business schools equip students with truly international management skills which is the utmost requirement to excel in the globalized business world today.

Global Warming

The subject has been debated for quite a while now. There are those who hide away in their holes, like bears hibernating in the winter. Oh, wait, that's probably not a good analogy. There are those who blame the "El Nino" for the unseasonably warm weather we are having in parts of the country. Most recently I have also heard that the 70 degree January weather is also just a cyclical thing. The earth has hot flashes, too.

I want to know where El Nino came from. If that is the cause of some of this warm weather, what is the cause of the El Nino? I don't recall having heard of that growing up. I've been around for a few decades and not until recently has El Nino been mentioned. Maybe it was a California thing, like thong bikinis and only now is it starting to be known in other parts of the country. I like warm weather, and I don't mind thong bikinis, but when the weather cycle starts to impact crops and ice shelves and impact arctic and antarctic wildlife, maybe we need to examine what's going on.
Oh, wait, some people have examined it already.

It's that pesky science stuff again. I tell you what. We need to give that science stuff a rest already. Haven't enough things been discovered already? Now it's just getting in the way of reasonable policy.

I think it is quite possible that El Nino, cyclical changes and emissions all have something to do with the weather changes. I am pretty sure that we can't change Mother Nature, so we have to do what we can on the third leg of the warming stool. (That sounds a little gross.

The first step our government needs to take is to get the politics out of science. Maybe there is no effect on the climate from our polluting ways, but the rest of the world seems to think that there is. Doesn't that suggest that we should re-examine the data and take whatever steps we need to, in order to preserve the planet for future generations?

It seems to me that we are presented the perfect scenario. A true win-win for the United States and the cilvilized world. Develop alternate energy sources, reduce dependence on oil, reduce pollution, reduce the income for terrorists by lowering the price of oil, and clean up the environment. What is the worst that could happen then? Suppose there is no man-made global warming. Is there a downside to the points I've just made?

Oh, yeah, there is one downside. Big oil would lose. But they are already going to lose. Their raw materials can only last so long. Many respected reports have already said we are past the 50% depleted level of oil in the ground. The midpoint for oil has been placed everywhere from 1972 to yesterday, but the truth of the matter is that it took millions of years to produce that oil and we have run through a large percentage of it in less than a century. Now is the time to start replacing oil with other energy sources, for the good of all.

Greed and Global Warming

Everywhere you turn, green is on the minds of the human race. Global warming, skyrocketing oil prices, smog choked air; it is all finally coming to a head. For many of us this is our second really serious environmental movement. We can remember back in the early seventies the effects of the hippies, they had us stop littering and returning our pop cans for a nickel. Grade schools tried to convince to place solar panels on our roofs, and buying smaller cars. And it all worked for awhile.

But alas Reagan came into power and the contrast of the hippie was created, he was the yuppie. They were the same people more or less, but now instead of ingesting hallucinogens and taking part in orgiastic rituals in the back of a tie dye painted school bus, they erupted onto the capitalistic scene in a rage not seen since the twenties. Working around the clock pulling down enviable salaries and bonuses, and then buying up stocks of high tech start ups like they were LSD.

Yuppies raised the entire standard of living of a generation of people throughout the free world. Yes, the trickle down did almost dry up, but check your facts even the poorest among us are better off post eighties then before.

During this time of me firstism, the environment took a hit. Yes, we tried to save the rainforest, we sent checks, we read our labels on fine furniture, but by and large we went about our business. We bought SUV's, big screens, computers, appliances, took trips, bought yachts, and pretended paradise was a place on Earth and it would last forever.

Enter sobriety. The good times did not last, children were shooting their schools up, and we began to feel guilty. The dot coms crashed, and war began to break out at alarming rates. People like scientists and terrorists got our attention and we realized that there was a price to pay for me first. Dammit anyhow.

Fast forward to 2007, here comes the environmental movement again, just in the nick of time. Polar ice caps are disappearing, holes in the ozone, devastating hurricanes demolish cities built below sea level, and we need to fix it. But how? This problem is bigger than unsightly litter; this is the very livability of our planet.

The stage is set for a hero to rally around, a catalytic personality whose charisma and logic persuade us to see beyond our next trip to the mall. Who will this person be? One so charming, so effervescent, that we will once and for all realize our actions today have an impact beyond next week? Who will finally make us do the right thing? Believe it or not it just might be Al Gore. Turns out he is smarter than we all thought. He wrote a book, and as luck would have it he is liberal so Hollywood helped him make a movie.

We all thought about our wasteful ways and vowed to do better. But as we have seen guilt only goes so far. Sooner or later we would return to our merry ways of indulging our whims at the price of the environment. But the ball is rolling; nothing feeds social movement faster than what is seen as the cool thing to do. And if Hollywood is doing it then it is cool.

But cool wears out, cool changes like the wind. What doesn't change is our love for money. a gallon gas hurts, we buy smaller cars. It is cool and saves us money, different from the Hummer, which used to be cool and costs a lot of money.

So we have something cool and saves us money. It is a rarity when going cheap is also the hip thing to do. But in this case the environment wins as does our pocketbook. But wait we have been here before right? During the oil embargo in the seventies not long after the environmental movement lost its steam, gas went up, and cars were bought more for mpgs than horsepower and style. What happened to that movement? Well see above and gas prices leveled out, sure they continued up more, but at a less frantic pace. We could afford it; we were making all that money being yuppies.

So what is different down? There is now money to be made in the environmental movement. Serious money. Remember when conspiracy had it that Exxon bought up all the plans around that could make cars run on Chicken manure? It was ridiculous of course, but the fact of the matter is big money was never behind the environmental movement. Until now, now we have that Exxon, plus Chevrolet, plus Archer Daniels Midland in on it. So are numerous start ups, taking the place of dot comers are alternative fuel companies, sprouting up everywhere. And let us not forget the international scene, where the former third world economies in places like Asia are well versed in the problem of bringing alternative technologies to the masses.

There is also money to be made in cleaning up factories, which are paying huge levies for polluting; there is money in recycling, finally. Money is also to be made in turning sea water into fresh water, and reclaiming fresh water sources; if you can imagine a solution you can imagine a profit.

You see the solution is the same with every problem. The trick is this; you have to make people want to do something. Seriously want to, not guilt them. Guilt wears out, but doing something for you does not. If you can make people think there is something in it for them they will do it. That is the motivating force of everyone from Mother Theresa to Adolph Hitler. And now that the green movement has serious green money to be made in it, then it is here to stay.

Of course, a couple of more stories about the peril of polar bears always help. We like cute too.

About Global Warming

Nowadays, with the development of economy, more and more greenhouse gases are being discharged into the air.Co2 makes up about 70 present of greenhouse gases. It is considered to be one of the greatest reasons leading to global warming.

It is very serious, but many people have not recognized it because they only think about themselves as well as the present profits. They don’t mind the ice melting. They don’t mind how many animals become extinctive. They don’t mind how many coastal cities become flooded. They are wrong. Neglecting the environment in which they live in is equal to neglecting their rights as well as their offspring’s rights to sustain in this planet.

Global warming can have many strong influences for us. For example, global warming will enhance the sea level and several years later, many places will be immerged under water and many people will lose their hometown and thus some of them may become homeless. Meanwhile, global warming, as a tremendous change in nature, may cause the widespread of the many diseases and even epidemics. In this way, it is highly possible that people in the future may suffer physical miseries. At the same time, this climate change also will have great influence on people’s mental health, leading to some psychological problems. As to the nature itself, since global warming will give the air and ocean huge power, so it may bring serious natural disasters such as typhoons, hurricanes, tsunamis and other disasters. In that case, people will have to pay more to fight against these natural disasters and the living costs will increase terribly.

So we must take effective measures to save our planet. First, we should use more clean energy and less coal and oil. Since almost all of these resources are not recyclable. On the contrary, we must develop the technology to utilize the sustainable energy such as the solar energy or the wind. Second, we should go to work on foot or by bus inspect driving a car if possible. Everybody can make some contribution to building a low-carbon life. Third, we should plant more trees, because plants can turn Co2 into oxygen. More importantly, we should from the habit of saving energy in our daily life.

Global warming must come to the center of our concern since it not only will affect the quality of our life but also affect the existence of our offspring.

Global Warming is Irrelevant

Recently, the nation and indeed the world has been inundated by dire, apocalyptic warnings about the consequences of global warming. The media blasts you with front page headlines about how you and your children might die while a murdered African-American child (who actually DID die) barely earns a mention on page 30 below the fold. The United Nations and the U.S. Congress have spent months studying the global warming phenomenon at tremendous cost and energy while in some countries citizens can't even get a drink of clean water. Environmental groups spend thousands of dollars sending out mailings (on paper) bemoaning global warming and, ironically, deforestation.

All of these efforts are for what? To "raise your awareness?" Nope. It's all about the money. And nothing makes people give up their money better than fear. Fear will make you pay, and it will make you vote.

In America, both sides of the legislative aisle have been guilty of utilizing fear to get your votes and your money.

Not too long ago, the Right tried to make you believe that Islamic terrorists were EVERYWHERE, and that they just might be tree-hugging, latte-sipping homosexuals who wanted to get married in YOUR church right after they attended a fund raiser at Bill Clinton's house. And you know what? It worked. The Right won by an overwhelming majority nation-wide.

Now, it's the Left's turn to try to scare the pants off of you by claiming that YOU'RE ALL GOING TO DIE BY GLOBAL WARMING!!!! THOSE GREEDY OIL MEN ARE GOING TO KILL YOUR CHILDREN!! Well, here's what I have to say: Who cares? Global warming is irrelevant to the issue of environmentalism. Now, before you get too bent out of shape, let me explain.

THERE IS NOTHING THAT SAYS WE SHOULD NOT BE GOOD STEWARDS OF OUR ENVIRONMENT. Where is it written that just because we are an industrial society that we should not take care of the air and water? Global warming has been proven and disproven by tons of scientists. Even esteemed author Michael Crichton in his book "State of Fear" makes a good argument that global warming as a cause of human activity may very well NOT exist. Therefore, if the global warming issue is taken out of the equation, should we then feel free to poison ourselves with pollutants? Of course not.

Environmentalism is not necessarily a global warming issue. It is, however, a national health and a national security issue.

I think the health concerns are self-evident, but if they are not to you then I will explain. Humans produce waste products. Our factories and modes of transportation pollute the air and water. Chemicals we use leech into the ground water, rivers, streams, lakes and oceans. This, as they say, is not good. If we poison our surroundings we poison the very air and water which give us life. I personally do not want my son to breathe air that is filled with junk, drink dirty water, or eat fish that is laden with mercury. By not taking care of our surroundings we are causing harm to our national state of health.

Now on to national security. This may not be as self-evident as health. If our troops are not at the prime of health due to exposure to pollutants, then that is a detriment to our national security. Healthy troops are more efficient. Additionally, it's not wise for the U.S. to allow a group of men in the most unstable region in the world to dictate to us the price to run a car. Nor should the U.S. be satisfied that the military, and indeed the whole country, could very easily be shut down by the destruction of a couple of pipelines. These situations place the United States in a perpetual state of vulnerability. This is not conducive to a strong, secure nation.

Therefore, our national energy should be focused on researching alternate energy sources, cleaner technologies for factories, protecting the air and water, and not on whether global warming is going to kill us all.
